March 21, 2008 (Good Friday)
Sacred Heart Cultural Center, 7:30 PM
Lotti: Crucifixus
Monteverdi: Beatus Vir
Bach: Ruht Wohl (From the St. John Passion)
Rutter: Requiem
with chorus, soloists and orchestra
When the calendar cooperates, the ACS relishes the opportunity to perform a concert on Good Friday evening for which repertoire possibilities abound. In keeping with the season, the ACS will perform works from the 17th, 18th, and 20th centuries. Each work presents a different set of challenges for the performers and the audience. The Monteverdi selection is an excellent example of the concertato principle of the early Baroque. Sections for a variety of soloists alternate with a lively ritornello in the orchestra and choir. The Crucifixus a 8 by Antonio Lotti (a relative contemporary of J. S. Bach) is in a Venetian style and features alternating polyphonic and homophonic textures. The Ruht wohl is the final chorus from the Passion According to St. John of J. S. Bach. These three Baroque examples provide a stark contrast to the 20th century popular style of English composer John Rutter. His Requiem freely combines the traditional Latin text with texts from the Anglican Book of Common Prayer. Though at times somewhat dissonant and dark, this work by Rutter is unfailingly optimistic, compelling, and, typically, very tuneful.
